Do folks out there prefer to connect their VFDs as nodes on a control network or to nodes on a control network?

I like to use peer to peer network for fast data exchange between the drives and a tap to a PLC or SCADA.

It depends on the complexity necessary for the process. In a less complex process I avoid using the VFD as a node simply due to future costs. Drives do fail and when they fail you must be able to repair it or replace it. Too often the model in use has become obsolete and the replacement has a different footprint and parameters. You may reduce the downtime by keeping some functions simple.

I agree with Robert, use of VFD should depend on the Hydraulic system's complexity; however simple HPUs employing large electric motors can defiantly benefit from energy savings features offered by VFDs. Parker offers VFD drives which are modular and can be repaired on site by plant electricians. Since these VFDs are modular any electronic component upgrade will be internal to phase modules, making these units serviceable and current for long periods of time.
